Diabetes & Nutrition Center Department of St. Joseph Hospital

Within the Center a comprehensive program provides education and training to assist individuals with diabetes in developing self-management skills for use in controlling the disease. The program, which is recognized by the American Association of Diabetes Educators includes individual and group classes facilitated by certified diabetes educators (CDEs). Individual followup with the registered nurse and/or registered dietitian is designed to promote ongoing success with diabetes management. The center also provides individual medical nutrition therapy (MNT) services; help with insulin titrations, continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pump management.


Lori Downs RN, CDE

A Certified Diabetes Educator, Lori provides outpatient diabetes patient medical care for oral and insulin therapies, oversees the Diabetes & Nutrition Center's support group meetings and provides outpatient diabetes education services and training programs. She is a graduate of the University of Maine

Julie Hovencamp RD, CDE
Registered dietitian and nutrition services specialist for both the St. Joseph Diabetes & Nutrition Center and St. Joseph Endocrinology. Julie provides education and counseling for diabetes patients in weight loss, nutritional education, dietary needs for special medical conditions such as heart disease and hypertension, renal disease, vitamin deficiencies and endocrine related health needs. She is a graduate of the University of Maine with an MS in Food Science and Human Nutrition.

Sheryl Sparlin FNP, CDE
Sheryl is a Certified Diabetes Educator and diabetes management specialist. She is a graduate of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at Husson University.
