St. Joseph Gastroenterology offers a wide range of digestive disease diagnosis and care, including liver studies, ERCP, video capsule endoscopy, esophageal studies, upper endoscopy and colonoscopy.  Our physicians are committed to provide the highest quality digestive disease health care in Northern and Eastern Maine.

Founded in 1971, the leading Gastroenterology practice in the region became part of the St. Joseph Healthcare family of group practices in 2008.  As an integral part of St. Joseph Healthcare, the seven providers of St. Joseph Gastroenterology continue to bring our region excellent gastrointestinal medical care from their offices in Suite 100, St. Joseph Hospital, 360 Broadway, as well as advanced screening endoscopic procedures in the Surgery Center at the Hospital.

Our Gastroenterology Providers

Angeli Chopra MD, a Board Certified Gastroenterologist, served her residency at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She completed a Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Alberta, and a fellowship in Hepatology (study of the liver and related organs) at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.



Mark Lena MD is a Board Certified Gastroenterologist. He received his medical degree from Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College and completed post graduate training at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center’s Lahey-Hitchcock Clinic. He has been in practice for 26 years.



Erika Madrigal MD. A Board-certified Gastroenterologist, Dr. Madrigal received her medical degree at Central University of Venezuela, Caracas. She completed an Internal Medicine residency and served a Gastroenterology Fellowship at Loma Linda University in California, followed by a year of Interventional Endoscopy at the University of Chicago.


Hatem Shoukeir MD is a Board certified Gastroenterologist. He received his medical degree from American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine and served a fellowship in Gastroenterology at SUNY Health Science Center, Brooklyn, NY.
