When St. Joseph Healthcare employees learned that thousands of marines who are based in
far-flung locations in Afghanistan are lacking access to basic necessities such as
personal hygiene items and are also solely dependent upon MREs (meals-ready-to-eat) for
food, they jumped into action.
In celebration of St. Joseph Day (Friday, March 19) employees spearheaded a campaign
utilizing the military sanctioned AnyMarine.com
website. Each marine listed on the site provides a list of items that his/her unit
would appreciate receiving and that marine agrees to distribute these items to his
fellow service members. More than 30 departments adopted a marine and the marine’s unit,
providing requested items.
All told, St. Joseph employees supported more than 1200 marines in more than 30
different units stationed in very rugged conditions in Afghanistan. Employees personally
purchased items that were requested, but also provided some comforts of home by sending
snacks, magazines, clothing and, of course, letters of encouragement. This is another
project that demonstrates how St. Joseph employees are committed and engaged in the
mission of St. Joseph Healthcare even when it extends well beyond the greater Bangor
region.
